For years, getting a table at El Bulli was almost impossible: a few thousand bookings a year for hundreds of thousands of requests. It closed in 2011.
What many people don't know is that the building never went anywhere. It still stands exactly where it was, on the edge of Cala Montjoi, inside the Cap de Creus Natural Park. And since 2023 you can visit it.
What El Bulli was and why it was here
At one end of a cove reached by twelve kilometres of narrow road, with almost nothing around it, the restaurant that changed the way we understand cooking ran for fifty years.
The location wasn't an eccentricity: it was part of the method. Isolation, a short season, months of workshop. Ferran Adrià and his team closed for half the year to do research. Hard to imagine that in the middle of a city.
What Cala Montjoi is like today
A wide cove of coarse sand and pebbles, sheltered by hills, with the seabed dropping away quickly just a few metres from the shore. That last detail explains two things: that boats can come in close, and that it's one of the best diving spots in the area.
And it keeps something rare on the Costa Brava: no town around it, no seafront promenade, no row of bars. The road ends and the sea begins. Because car access is restricted in summer, it doesn't get crowded even in August: there's plenty of space on the sand.
Visiting elBulli1846
The museum occupies the original building, fully preserved, and surrounds it with an open-air route.
- 2026 season: from 1 May to 12 October.
- Days: Tuesday to Saturday, with exceptions. It's worth checking their calendar before you go.
- Hours: 10:00 to 15:00, last entry at 12:00.
- Duration: about two and a half hours.

2026 prices: general admission is €27.50. There's a reduced rate of €20.50 for over-65s, students, young people aged 11 to 15, Roses residents, Carnet Jove holders, groups of ten or more, and people with a disability of 33% or higher. Children under 10 enter free with their family. If you drive, a parking space at the museum is €8.50 extra.
Two practical tips you'll be glad of:
Buy your ticket online and with a date. At the box office each ticket carries a €2.50 surcharge, and booking ahead secures your day and time.
Bring headphones. The guide runs on your phone. If you forget them, they're on sale there, but it's silly to pay for a pair you already have at home.
And something that surprises a lot of people: it's not a food museum. You don't taste anything. It's a route about how innovation is systematised, told through a kitchen. If you go expecting a tasting, you'll leave disappointed. If you go expecting to understand how that team thought, you'll leave with your head full.
To eat, though, you'll have to head down: many people finish the visit at the beach bar-restaurant on Cala Montjoi beach, a few minutes' walk from the museum.
How to get there (and why it matters in summer)
From 1 July to 31 August, from 9:30 to 16:00, there's an access checkpoint on the Montjoi road that blocks vehicles with four wheels or more.
Your museum ticket, which you receive by email when you buy online, proves the purpose of your trip at that checkpoint: just show it on your phone, no need to print anything.
If you come by motorbike, by bike or on foot, the restriction doesn't affect you. And if you'd rather not drive that road —bends, narrow, two-way—, you can walk in along the coastal path, entering the park at l'Almadrava beach. It only closes when Plan Alfa 4 is activated for extreme fire risk.
There's no bus to the cove. The tourist train that leaves from Roses passes by, but doesn't stop.

What else is at the cove
Almost nobody who comes for El Bulli knows what's right next to it:
- The seabed. That quick drop-off we mentioned makes Montjoi a serious spot for diving and snorkelling, not just a splash about with a mask.
- The coastal path. It links the coves of Cap de Creus. You can walk a short stretch and turn back.
- The natural park itself. Montjoi is one of its gateways.
- Accommodation. Right behind the beach.
And that's the real difference. Almost everyone who reaches Cala Montjoi comes to see something and leaves before sunset, because they have to drive back down.
Staying is another thing entirely. The cove at eight in the morning, empty. The museum a ten-minute walk away. And at seven in the evening, once the cars have gone down, the beach belongs again to those who sleep here.
