It is one of the largest fortresses in the world, the largest bastioned fortress in Europe and the most important monument in Ampurdan and the largest in Catalonia. Currently, the castle is declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest as a Historic Artistic monument, and it is the only fortress in Catalonia owned by the Spanish State. Located on a hill in the municipality of Figueres, it was built in the XNUMXth century. It is currently open to the public with guided tours.
